INDIGENOUS CHICKEN BREEDERS & HATCHERIES

 The BOSCHVELDER Breed

The Boschvelder breed is a very popular choice when it come to the 'free-range' chicken.  They are hardy chickens that survive the harsh climate conditions in Africa and at the same time, live off what nature has to offer  in a large camped off area.

By supplementing some of their feed with added nutrients, which they might be missing will enhance growth and boost their egg production, and in turn will produce better results in terms of their growing abilities as free-range chickens. The Boschvelder's hardiness and inbreeding, has led to withstand a variety of poultry illnesses, however,  it is important to continue and maintain the inoculation program.

Boschvelder roosters are known to be strong, aggressive and more so a noble rooster. The roosters are very colorful with some white in their display of feathers. The hens are equally as strong and fertile, producing healthy offspring and delightful chickens to rear. The hens display of feathers have white speckles.

The Boschvelder through interbreeding of various indigenous breeds produce as many as 240 eggs per year with a fraction of the cost to feed as compared to other breeds.

The current statistics for the Boschvelder breeding flock is 50 eggs per 100 hens daily, with a hatchability of 70-80% with the breeding ratio = 10 hens : 1 rooster.

Generally, the Boschvelder chickens are great to have as  back-yard pets, they enjoy human company and the hens are  great with children.  When it comes to commercial farming the hens are a wonderful and productive breed for laying large colorful eggs and the roosters grow exceptionally big so they are very good for meat rearing.
